Project Description

Selected as the General Contractor for the Detroit Zoo’s Wildlife Interpretive Gallery, White Construction was excited to participate in the restoration of this unique facility. The building features a butterfly and hummingbird garden that allows visitors to interact directly with the varied numbered of species within the facility as they stroll through the exhibit.  The interior of the building was designed as an extraordinary gathering space with a new mezzanine that features the facility’s interactive exhibits. The lobby features a nautilus pattern constructed on the colorful 40 ft. diameter terrazzo floor. Also, a 2,500 gallon salt water aquarium is suspended in air, giving guests an ultimate viewing experience from below or from a smaller viewing area on the mezzanine level. The lobby also features limestone walls imprinted with authentic fossils of prehistoric animals.

The Gallery features a multi-media theater with balcony seating for large groups. The theater houses temporary exhibition space in the side pavilion areas when needed.

This project was honored by the Engineering Society of Detroit with the prestigious Design & Construction Award.
